Anybody Need a Hug? They’re Free Now.

by Jenny on 5 July 2009

I like to collect free stuff when I go to special events. Even when the admission to a festival is free, there is usually a parking charge, plus the expense of food from usually overpriced vendors. I somehow feel better about the entire outlay when I bring home things that I didn’t have to pay any money to obtain. For instance, the “free” Pittsburgh 250 water bottles that I obtained at Pittburgh’s 250th anniversary bash last October (the bottles were actually sponsored by a bunch of government agencies that spend our tax money), or the Pepcid AC samples that I stocked up on at yesterday’s Pittsburgh Regatta.

The Pepcid AC samples were nice to have for my first aid kit, but I was looking for something bigger, something better. My husband, sister Elizabeth, and I moved through the crowd toward the Point, where Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers join. I saw a sign waving in the crowd at the Regatta. “Free -” something. Free what?

“Free Hugs!”
“Free Hugs!”
“Free Hugs!”

We saw three guys, who all looked to be in their twenties, holding signs offering free hugs. And people were actually taking them up on the offer. Not just girls. Guys, too. We stared at them as we walked past in amazement and disbelief.

Later on in the afternoon, the guys were joined by a bunch of girls who also offered free hugs. And people were still enthusiastic about the offer. We overhead people in the crowd say, “Hey, they’re offering free hugs over there!”

I guess that a lot of people actually needed hugs.

Well, I wish that Jonathan or I had gotten a picture of them. If they are at other festivals, then we should be able to get a picture of them next time.

I read something somewhere about the Free Hugs guys. Apparently they make it out to all of the big Pittsburgh festivals…
