Sailing the Ports of the Great Lakes

So we have this great idea for a documentary based on sailing the ports of the Great Lakes. We would detail the mariners working on the Great Lakes, and how the various ports of call have fit into the complex and storied history of the Great Lakes. We would interview harbormasters past and present to tell stories of the ports and how things have changed. We would do this by sailing to the various ports, utilizing new and old technology to navigate the waters and learn a little bit about what it was like to work on the water a hundred years ago, and what it is like to work on the water today.

It's a fun idea. Now all we need is a few piles of money, this boat, a few more piles of money, and we'll be all set. So if you're interested in buying the boat and/or supplying some piles of money, let us know. Phone lines are open.... :)

BTW, I've found myself drawn to this style of boat lately. It's called a Friendship Sloop, and is based off of some working sailboats of years long past. It is typically a gaff-rigged boat. The example in the link above happens to be quite large and quite awesome.

A warm end to a cold week

Jenny and I are sitting here in our now-warm house. A few weeks ago, during one of the big cold snaps we had here, our furnace started to make a squeaking noise. Upon investigation, it turned out the noise was coming from the combustion chamber blower, which pulls cool air through the combustion chamber and then exhausts the hot air and gasses out the flue. It sounded like its bearings were going bad. We didn't have time to have it serviced right away, and it was otherwise running just fine, so we figured we could call on a day when I was going to be working from home.

Photos for sale (in case you're bored)

I have been playing with Apple's Aperture software a lot lately. Aperture is a photo management package that implements a feature-rich library management system and some nice tools for white balance, color correction, cropping, basic retouching, and a slew of other photo editing actions. It isn't Photoshop, but does not pretend to be. I needed a great library management package, and really wanted something to make it fast and easy to import, modify, and manage RAW format photos.

Pictures from St. Louis!

St. Louis Arch
I have finally posted the pictures from St. Louis. There aren't a whole lot of them--we really only had part of one day to explore during the daylight. I didn't take the big camera to the blues club, so the one picture from that is an iPhone picture. Click on the picture above to head to the gallery to check out the rest! You'll even get to see my friends from work J and N there! :)

Call me a slacker...

Yeah. Just call me a giant slacker. I am. I didn't realize it had been a month since I posted anything here. Life got a little busy, and I let this slip for a little while. Sorry about that. Here is a quick recap of January:
