What print newspapers need to do to survive the internet age, or: How to get a print edition subscriber for life

by Jonathan 9 March 2009 Technology

My Dad gave me a copy of the News Photographer magazine yesterday, which is the journal for the National Press Photographers Assocation. It was a good read, and got me to thinking about a bunch of stuff. I was poking-around on the NPPA website today, and saw this quote:

A new camera, a picnic, maybe some other new technology, and a collapsing retaining wall

by Jonathan 7 March 2009 House and Home

Jenny at the DamJenny and I just got home after a most delightful picnic. I am working as Sound Designer for a show over in the Riverview school district (that’s in Oakmont, PA, in case you’re not from these parts). There was a tech work session today, so I was busy over there for that. I was done with my part right around 15:00.

Do odd things happen in your old house, too?

by Jonathan 2 March 2009 House and Home

Do odd things happen in your old house, too? Jenny and I have never really felt “alone” here in our home, though we’ve also not had a whole lot happen that we thought was out of the ordinary. Lately, though, we’ve had at least two incidents that seemed to be strange.

Pictures from St. Louis!

by Jonathan 4 February 2009 Photography

St. Louis Arch
I have finally posted the pictures from St. Louis. There aren’t a whole lot of them–we really only had part of one day to explore during the daylight. I didn’t take the big camera to the blues club, so the one picture from that is an iPhone picture. Click on the picture above to head to the gallery to check out the rest! You’ll even get to see my friends from work J and N there! :)

Call me a slacker…

by Jonathan 1 February 2009 Technology

Yeah. Just call me a giant slacker. I am. I didn’t realize it had been a month since I posted anything here. Life got a little busy, and I let this slip for a little while. Sorry about that. Here is a quick recap of January:

Some small blog changes

by Jonathan 8 November 2008 Technology

Some readers might notice a few changes here. They are pretty minor, but probably warrant some quick notes. The biggest change is that posts on the main page are now in “summary” format. To read the whole post, click on the “Read More” gadget at the bottom of the post. This change was made so that the posts on the front page are somewhat more concise, and readers who are interested in only certain items can read only those items in depth, instead of scrolling all over the page. The other update of consequence is that the user login block was moved to the right sidebar.

Noodles and Gentoo

by Jonathan 2 October 2008 Technology

Hmm. Technology and cooking as keywords for this entry. I’m probably going to make some automatic content categorization system explode.

Jenny and I both worked from home today. This is a great way to save on gas, and it lets us both get some stuff done around the house during small breaks in the day. I had this crazy idea the other day that I wanted to make homemade pasta one day this week. Today was the day. Woohoo!

I cleaned-up the kitchen before I started with work today. Jenny and I walked up to Eazer’s in downtown New Kensington for lunch. We had a great lunch for not a lot of money, which is always a big plus. From there, Jenny went home and I walked over to Foodland to get some eggs and pasta sauce. They also had a loaf of Italian bread from a local bakery, so all that stuff jumped into my basket, and I headed home. After completing my work for today, I went upstairs to find our laundry drying rack, which happens to also work quite well as a noodle drying rack. I got all of the stuff ready and started to make dough. I decided that I’d use half white and half whole-wheat flour, which turned out to be a great idea. I always liked whole-wheat pasta, but it was always on the expensive side.

By the time all was said and done, I had made six batches of pasta, using an entire dozen eggs, twelve cups of flour, and a lot of hand cranking on the pasta machine. For dinner, I cooked the small pile of partial noodles that was left from the six batches, plus one whole batch of pasta. Yum. I love fresh pasta. I cut and bagged the rest of the pasta after dinner and tossed it into the freezer for future pasta goodness. That ended up making a ton of pasta, which is cool.

The other, completely-unrelated thing that I wanted to mention is that I’m now running the Gentoo Linux distribution on my laptop. I was running the Ubuntu Linux distribution, but it was overall pretty unsatisfying, and it had a tendency to frustrate me. Gentoo is much more down-to-earth, and puts me back in control of the system in a way that I like. Hey, I’m still a sysadmin deep down–what can I say?

That’s about all from me for updates. It’s getting colder here now. I finally had to turn the furnace on this morning so that we could work without our fingers freezing. All of the windows in the house are closed now. It is really feeling like Fall.

Linux hard disk encryption

by Jonathan 23 September 2008 Technology

Some readers know that I like to play with technology a bit.

Today, I finally successfully made hard disk encryption work on my linux laptop. This makes me pretty happy. I’ve been playing with various incarnations of this technology for a while–it is nice to have one that actually works the way it is supposed to work.

If you are also geeky and interested, here’s a good how-to for the current wave of “new technology” that integrates block-device encryption with the kernel:

Hi

by Jonathan 4 September 2008 Outdoors

Hi.  Sorry that I haven’t had any updates here for a while.  I’ve been somewhat busy lately and have been letting this slide.  I still have to get the vacation pictures off of my camera and consolidated.

Jenny and I have been taking sailing lessons at Moraine Sailing Club at Moraine State Park.  They’re good people.  I have one skill left to demonstrate, and that is the man overboard (MOB) response drill.  We don’t actually have to pick up a person–the instructor along for the drill tosses a cushion out at some point and calls out "man overboard!"  The skipper then must enter into a broad reach to pick up speed and get a stable course.  He or she then comes-about in a 270-degree "chicken jibe", aiming to put the boat downwind of the MOB by two to three boat lengths.  Once there, he or she luffs-up toward the MOB, finally letting all sails luff as the MOB is approached on the windward side of the boat.  Why the windward?  Well, for one thing, if the MOB was approached on the leeward side, the boat may be blown on top of the MOB.

We’ve been having a good time with that stuff.  A couple of weeks ago was the last session that I could make it to this season.  I only had the MOB and the capsize recovery drills to complete.  Unfortunately, due to some delays doing the capsize recovery drills, I didn’t get a chance to do the MOB drills.

Capsize recovery, you say?  Yes.  We went out in pairs on Sunfish (small dinghy-style lateen-rigged sailboat), then had to intentionally capsize the boat, recover the boat, and resume sailing.  We each had to do this twice–once as the crew and once as the helmsman.  By the time I got out, it was me and another bigger guy, and we had a boat that already had its hull structure partially flooded from previous drills.  Let me just say that it was an adventure doing our two drills. It was a good skill to practice, though, so I think it was well worth it.

Since then, Jenny and I have been busy with all sorts of things.  We had some family obligations to attend to, and spent some time doing some bike riding up at Presque Isle and on the Yough River Trail.  Last weekend, we finally did our annual Connellsville -> Ohiopyle round-trip ride.  We hadn’t done a long ride in a little while, and our knees were killing us by the time we got home, but it was a great ride.

Now we’re getting ready to depart for a little journey–I’ll have pictures posted of that when we return.  It should be fun!

In other news, I think that it is time to drop the DirecTV service. I love it, but I don’t think that we use it nearly enough anymore.  We’ve used it only a little over the past eight months or so.  We’ve used it more to watch stuff on local channels than we have to watch network TV, so I think it’s time. We probably use it most often to listen to XM Radio in the house, so I think we might get an XM Radio subscription–we’ll see.

Well, that’s about all for now.

I did it!

by Jonathan 9 June 2008 Technology

So, I finally did it.  Here it is–Blog V3.  Let me know if you have any problems.  I’ll be adding some stuff in the near future, too.  There are a few missing things right now (links, a few old pages didn’t migrate correctly, and the twitter status block is not there yet).  Also, if you had an account on the old blog, you’ll probably need to create another one here.  Sorry about that.  I promise that I’ll try to stop jumping among software packages.
